FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Duke Wrestling finished Day One of the South Beach Duals on Sunday competing against Michigan State and South Dakota State.

The Blue Devils, who were wrestling in their first dual matches of the year, dropped a 44-0 decision to the Spartans before falling 41-3 to the Jackrabbits.

Duke faced three top-20 wrestlers on the day, including South Dakota State's Tanner Sloan, who's ranked No. 14 by InterMat.

Redshirt freshman Mason Eaglin registered the Blue Devils' lone points on the day when he took down Cade King of SDSU by a 9-4 decision in the 174-pound battle.

Junior 157-pounder Eric Carter hung tough with Michigan State's Jake Tucker, who's ranked No. 18. Carter fell by a 4-0 decision to his nationally ranked foe. Redshirt sophomore Benjamin Anderson was also strong against the Spartans, dropping a 6-2 decision to Drew Hughes in the 165-pound matchup.

Against the Jackrabbits, freshman Wade Unger nearly recorded points for Duke but fell to Peyton Smith by a 7-5 decision at the 149-pound spot. Fellow classmate Jonah Niesenbaum also had himself a close match. The Allentown, Pa., native dropped a 3-2 decision to Blake Wolters but it was a back-and-forth affair until the very end.

Duke returns to action Monday when it closes out the final day of the South Beach Duals. The Blue Devils are set to go head-to-head against No. 14 Lehigh and No. 15 Minnesota.
