Eaglin Wins But Duke Falls to No. 8 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Mason Eaglin registered a 4-1 decision-victory over North Carolina's Clay Lautt but the Blue Devils ultimately fell to their nationally ranked foe, 44-3, on Friday night.
The redshirt freshman held a slim 1-0 edge after two periods at 174 pounds but saw Lautt record an escape to tie things up in the third. Fortunately, Eaglin countered with a three-point takedown to earn Duke's lone points in the dual.
The Port Orchard, Wash., native pulls back to .500 in duals this season at 6-6 following Friday's win. He also improved his overall record this year to 17-8.
Eric Carter tried to add points at 157 pounds for the Blue Devils in his bout with No. 17 A.C. Headlee. The two were in a tight battle after the first period with Headlee in front, 2-1. The redshirt senior for the Tar Heels exploded in the second period to increase his advantage to 9-3 before going on to secure a 14-3 major decision win.
Also putting up a good fight for Duke was 285-pounder Ben Frye, who competed in his first collegiate wrestling match. Frye, a current member of the football team as well, joined the Blue Devils earlier in the month after closing out his football season. The Dublin, Ohio, native battled UNC's Andrew Gunning in the final match of the night. Gunning held a 2-1 lead after one, but Frye tallied a quick escaped to start the second period to tie things up at 2-2. Gunning registered a point on stalling to jump back in front 3-2 before closing out the third period strong to steal the win 8-2.
The Tar Heels, who came in ranked No. 8 in this week's NWCA Coaches Poll, had four ranked wrestlers compete Friday, including No. 4 Austin O'Connor (149).
Duke will return to the mat again on Wednesday when it hosts Gardner-Webb for a non-conference showdown at 7:30 p.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The dual will be streamed live on the ACC Network Extra, with TrackWrestling providing live stats.
