DURHAM, N.C. – Duke wrestling won three bouts on Friday night but ultimately dropped a, 34-15, decision to Virginia in an ACC dual in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Â
Redshirt sophomore
Benjamin Anderson and redshirt freshman
Mason Eaglin tallied back-to-back pins at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively, to cut into an early deficit. Rookie
Jonah Niesenbaum added a win at 285 pounds as well to close out the dual for the Blue Devils on a high note.
Â
Duke found itself down 18-0 early following two forfeits (125 and 141) and a pin (133). Another nine points for the visitor's over the next two matches increased their advantage but the Blue Devils tried to spark a rally when Anderson and Eaglin earned consecutive falls.
Â
Anderson's match with Cam Coy was a battle right from the beginning as he found himself down 6-0 after the first period. He then muscled his way back into the dual in the second following a two-point takedown and a two-point nearfall to cut the lead down to, 6-4. After Coy recorded a reversal, Anderson answered with a reversal of his own to keep it a two-point deficit at, 8-6. The Pleasant Grove, Utah, native finally made his move in the third, registering his second two-point takedown which led to a pin and a full six points for the Blue Devils.
Â
Eaglin made quick work of Virginia's Victor Marcelli at 174 pounds. The Port Orchard, Wash., native found himself down 2-0 early but used an escape and a two-point takedown of his own to jump on top, 3-2. A few seconds later Eaglin used that takedown to pin Marcelli just 2:42 into the match.
Â
Niesenbaum grinded out a 5-2 decision-win over Robert Scherer at 285 pounds. The two went back-and-forth for much of the match until the Allentown, Pa., native ultimately secure the win in the third period following a two-point takedown.
Duke will play host to No. 3 N.C. State on Friday, Feb. 21 for its regular season finale at 7 p.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Live video and stats will be available via the ACC Network and TrackWrestling, respectively.
