NEED TO KNOW
- Seeking its eighth NCAA Quarterfinal appearance in the last 11 years, No. 1-seeded Duke welcomes St. John's to Koskinen Stadium in the Round of 16 on Sunday evening.
- The match kicks off at 6 p.m. on ACC Network Extra with Dean Linke on the call.
- The Blue Devils earned a pair of 1-0 victories on their way to the Round of 16, defeating Old Dominion with a last-minute goal on Nov. 12 and edging out Memphis on Nov. 19.
- This tournament marks Duke's 27th all-time appearance in the NCAA Championship, including its 18th in the last 19 years. The Blue Devils hold a 44-22-11 record in 77 tournament matches.
- Duke earned a No. 1 seed in the tournament for the third time in program history. Each of the previous two instances (2011, 2017) saw the Blue Devils advance to the NCAA College Cup.
- The Blue Devils are 8-4-1 all-time in the Round of 16 with a 6-1-1 mark over their last nine matches in that stage. They have played in the Round of 16 in 10 of their last 11 NCAA Championship appearances.
- Duke is 37-15-10 in NCAA Championship matches under head coach Robbie Church.
- Senior Delaney Graham's game-winner versus Memphis was her first goal of the season and first tally since Oct. 15, 2020.
- It was assisted by Delaney's younger sister, sophomore Maggie Graham, and freshman Michelle Cooper.
- Cooper, who was recently named the ACC Freshman of the Year, ranks tied for sixth in goals (10) and tied for ninth in points (25) among all freshmen nationally.
- Junior goalkeeper Ruthie Jones' 0.48 goals against average in 19 starts is the fourth-best mark in the nation, while her .836 save percentage ranks 33rd.
- Graduate student Caitlin Cosme scored the winning goal against Old Dominion in the opening round on a free kick with 16 seconds remaining in regulation. Cosme leads the team with 1,664 minutes played this season.
DUKE VS. ST. JOHN'S
- Sunday will be the first all-time match between Duke and St. John's.
- Duke's first all-time meeting with an opponent has occurred in the NCAA Championship 16 times before, including its second-round matchup with Memphis on Friday night. The Blue Devils are 13-1-2 in those matches, with their only setback coming against Oklahoma State in the 2010 Round of 16.
- The Blue Devils are 9-7-3 all-time against teams currently in the Big East Conference, including one contest in the NCAA Championship (4-1 loss vs. Georgetown in 2018 Round of 16).
SCOUTING THE RED STORM
- St. John's punched its ticket to the Round of 16 via two matches that required extra time.
- The Red Storm defeated Brown in the opening round, 1-0, with sophomore Ava Collins netting the game-winner eight minutes into overtime.
- On Friday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium, St. John's and Samford battled to a 2-2 stalemate through 110 minutes of play before the Johnnies earned a 3-0 result in penalty kicks to advance.
- Ian Stone's side brings a 13-6-3 record into Sunday's tilt, including a 7-1-1 mark over its last eight matches.
- The Red Storm's only loss in that stretch was a 1-0 defeat against Georgetown in the Big East title game.
- Graduate student Zsani Kajan, the Big East Offensive Player of the Year, ranks in the top-five nationally in goals (17, third) and points (40, fifth) this season.
- All-Big East Second Team selection Jessica Garziano leads the team with nine assists from the midfield.
- Redshirt junior Naya Lipkens has started all 22 matches for St. John's, recording 80 saves (.800 save pct.) with 10 complete-game shutouts.
- Eight players have netted two or more goals this season, while five have reached the 10-point mark.
LAST TIME OUT: DUKE 1, MEMPHIS 0
- Senior Delaney Graham scored her first goal of the season in the 43rd minute to lift Duke to a 1-0 win over Memphis in the second round on Friday night at Koskinen Stadium.
- In front of a season-high crowd of 3,595, the Blue Devils posted their 12th shutout of the year and improved to 13-6-2 all-time in the second round of the NCAA Championship.
- Graham's goal came on a beautiful through ball played from sophomore Maggie Graham, who collected her second assist of the season. Michelle Cooper recorded a secondary assist, moving her point total up to 25 in her freshman campaign.
- The tally was Delaney's first since Oct. 15, 2020 -- snapping a 31-game stretch without a goal.
- Sophomore Grace Watkins made her first career start in her 37th match.
- Junior Sophie Jones played in her 50th career match, logging 80 minutes with a shot on goal.
DUKE AT KOSKINEN
- Despite Sunday's match officially being played as a neutral site game, Duke will look to capitalize on one of the best home-field advantages in the nation provided by Koskinen Stadium.
- The Blue Devils boast a 47-6-7 record at the venue since the start of the 2017 campaign, including an 11-2-0 mark this season.
- Four of Duke's seven wins against ranked opponents this season have come at Koskinen, including its 1-0 victory over then-No. 1 Florida State on Sunday, Oct. 24.
- Duke has outscored its opponents 31-7 at Koskinen this season.
- The 5-0 win over East Carolina on Sept. 9 marked head coach Robbie Church's 150th career victory at the venue.
- Duke is 24-2-1 in NCAA Championship matches played in Durham.
STEPPING IT UP ON DEFENSIVE END
- The Blue Devils' nine goals allowed are the fewest by an ACC team this season.
- Duke's 0.46 goals against average leads the conference and ranks second nationally.
- The Blue Devils have recorded 12 shutouts, the second-most in the ACC. Duke has held opponents off the scoreboard in seven of its last eight contests.
- Duke has allowed more than one goal in a match just twice this season -- a 2-1 double-overtime loss to NC State on Oct. 7, and a 2-1 defeat to Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament on Oct. 31.
- The Blue Devils recorded five consecutive shutout wins from Oct. 10-28, marking the eighth time in program history that Duke recorded a clean sheet in five or more straight games (1992 -- 5; 1997 -- 5; 2004 -- 7; 2011 -- 5; 2015 -- 5; 2016 -- 5; 2017 -- 5).
- Prior to a goal by Wake Forest in the first half of their ACC Tournament match, the Blue Devils had held opponents scoreless for the previous 478 minutes and 53 seconds -- the sixth-longest streak in program history. They enter Sunday's match having not yielded a goal in their last 186 minutes and 29 seconds of play.
- Duke held North Carolina scoreless on Sept. 17 for the first time in a 28-match span for the Tar Heels. On Oct. 24, the Blue Devils kept Florida State off the board for the first time in its last 17 games.
- Graduate student Caitlin Cosme, sophomore Katie Groff and sophomore Emily Royson anchor the Duke back line and have each logged over 1,500 minutes this season.
- All three players have played the entire 90 minutes in each of Duke's two wins in the NCAA Championship.
- Duke is 14-1-0 when scoring first this season and 9-0-0 when leading at halftime.
