DURHAM – Junior
Wendell Moore Jr., finished with 21 points, five rebounds and six assists to lead No. 2 Duke to a 92-67 win over Appalachian State on Thursday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Fourteen of Moore's points came in the second half, including a corner three that capped off a 9-0 run in less than a minute to help the Blue Devils (9-1) break the game open. The Mountaineers (6-6) cut their deficit to five before the Duke run, and from there were unable to get it back to a single-digit game.
The Blue Devils shot 15-of-30 from three-point range, marking the second straight game they hit 15 from beyond the arc. Moore nailed a career-high four three's, while senior
Joey Baker, sophomore
Jeremy Roach and freshmen
Paolo Banchero,
Trevor Keels and
AJ Griffin knocked down two apiece.
Banchero finished with 16 points to go along with a team-high six rebounds. Sophomore
Mark Williams, who celebrated his 20th birthday on Thursday, went 3-of-3 from the floor for six points, four boards and three blocked shots.
Michael Almonacy came out firing for Appalachian State, scoring 17 points in the first 11 minutes of the game to help the Mountaineers take a 24-23 lead. Almonacy was held scoreless from that point on, however, as Duke locked in defensively and allowed just eight made field goals in the second half.
Duke is back in action for its third contest of a four-game home stand when it welcomes Loyola (Md.) to Cameron on Saturday at 4 p.m. The game will air on ACC Network.
