Russell’s Pin Not Enough as Duke Falls to No. 7 NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. – Redshirt junior Kaden Russell pinned No. 16 ranked Isaac Trumble in the 197-pound bout, but it wasn't enough as Duke fell 37-6 to No. 7 NC State on Friday night in Reynolds Coliseum.

Russell handed Trumble his first loss of the season as the rookie headed into Friday's dual with a 6-0 unblemished mark. Russell locked in a cradle and quickly pinned his nationally ranked opponent 44 seconds into the match to earn his first victory of the year.

Redshirt freshman Brandon LaRue nearly overcame an early deficit in his bout at 157 pounds, but AJ Kovacs just outlasted the Wantage, N.J., native to hold onto the 4-2 decision win.

Sophomore Jonah Niesenbaum put up a good fight against his nationally ranked foe in No. 17 Deonte Wilson at the 285-pound matchup. The Allentown, Pa., native registered two escape points but ultimately dropped the contest 6-2.

At the conclusion of the dual, the two schools wrestled six additional exhibition matches. During that time, Logan Agin added his first career win by fall victory after he pinned Anthony Noto at the 6:47 mark of the 125-pound bout.

Duke will have a little time off before the ACC Championships on Sunday, Feb. 28 in Raleigh, N.C. at Reynolds Coliseum. That event will be broadcast live on both the ACC Network and ACC Network Extra.
