RALEIGH, N.C. – Redshirt junior
Josh Finesilver earned himself an automatic bid to the 2021 NCAA Championships after placing third at the ACC Wrestling Championships at Reynolds Coliseum on Sunday.
Finesilver was Duke's top finisher at the event and qualified for his third career NCAA Championship after also achieving the mark in 2018 and 2019. With his accomplishment, Duke has now sent a wrestler to the national event in 13-straight seasons. It also continues a long Finesilver family tradition of participating in the postseason tournament as the Blue Devils have sent at least one of four Finesilver brothers to every event since 2015. Older brothers Mitch and Zach were both four- and three-time qualifiers, respectively, while twin brother Matt, who was sidelined this year due to injury, has participated in two.
As the fourth seed in the 149-pound division, Finesilver defeated Virginia's Denton Spencer by major decision, 20-6, in his opening bout. The Greenwood Village, Colo., native then fell to top-seeded and eventual ACC Champion Austin O'Connor, 7-2, in his next match to drop him into the consolation bracket. There, he beat Michael Burnett of Pittsburgh by a 4-2 decision before claiming third place following his gutsy 10-5 decision over NC State's Ed Scott.
He wasn't the only Blue Devil to earn a victory on Sunday as rookie
Logan Agin pulled off the upset in his opening bout at 125 when he registered the 3-2 decision win over Pittsburgh's Colton Camacho. Unfortunately, the Lancaster, Ohio, native fell in his next two matches to second-seeded Jakob Camacho (NC State) by major decision 10-1 and to fifth-seeded Wil Guida (North Carolina) by a 9-4 decision to wrap up his first year as a Blue Devil.
Sophomore
Jonah Niesenbaum missed out on making the consolation finals in heartbreaking fashion after he fell 3-1 in sudden victory to Andrew Gunning from North Carolina.
Overall, Duke compiled 7.5 team points on the day to place sixth at the conference championships.
