DURHAM, N.C. – The 14th-ranked Duke women's soccer team used an impressive overall team effort Sunday inside Freeman Field at Koskinen Stadium to register a key 3-2 victory over rival and 19th-ranked North Carolina.
The Blue Devils collected three straight second half goals by
Carina Lageyre,
Avery Oder and
Devin Lynch to build a 3-0 advantage, before the Tar Heels added two goals in the final minute. Duke moved to 8-3-1 overall and 3-3-0 in the ACC, while North Carolina moved to 9-5-0, 3-3-0.
How It Happened
- The Blue Devils opened the match with the first shot attempt as senior Devin Lynch took the ball away from a UNC defender and sent a left-footed attempt that went wide.
- Duke had one of its best opportunities in the 35th minute as redshirt junior Elle Piper served in a great ball into the box where the Tar Heel keeper batted it to Blue Devil senior Julia Saunicheva at the 7-yard mark, but her attempt went high.
- In the 40th minute, junior Mia Oliaro sent a shot from outside the box that went across the goal and hit the far post.The attempt bounced back across the goal and UNC keeper Hannah Johann grabbed it off the line to preserve the shutout.
- At the end of the first half, Duke held an 8-3 shot advantage with Lynch, Piper and redshirt freshman Lauren Martinho with two attempts each.
- The Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead at the 48:37 mark.Saunicheva had a great effort to send a cross inside the box where freshman Avery Oder passed to senior Carina Lageyre at the top of the box, took a touch and placed a perfect shot inside the top right corner of the goal.
- A little over four minutes later, Duke took a 2-0 lead as Oder swiped a UNC clear attempt off a corner kick, took a couple of touches and hit the top right corner of the net from 22 yards out.
- The Blue Devils then took a 3-0 advantage in the 75th minute as Oliaro found a streaking senior Farrah Walters on the right side of the pitch.Walters served a ball into the box where Lynch one-timed a shot passed the keeper from 17 yards away.
- Duke nearly took a 4-0 lead as Walters fired a shot at the Blue Devil goal where Oliaro was on the ground and redirected the ball into the back of the net, but the referee went to review and she was called for offside.
- In the 80th minute, the Tar Heels had a good chance at a goal, but Duke goalkeeper Caroline Dysart was there to make the save.
- North Carolina added a goal at the 89:14 mark off the leg of Eres Freifeld and an own goal with 12 seconds remaining to conclude the match with a 3-2 ledger.

- Duke's three goals equaled the most the Blue Devils have registered in the series with North Carolina – 1994, 2010, 2024 and 2025.
- Redshirt junior Kat Rader missed her first contest of the season for the Blue Devils.
- Avery Oder totaled her first goal since Sept. 4 against VMI and her fifth of the season.
- Carina Lageyre collected her first tally of the season and fifth of her collegiate career.
- The three goals by the Blue Devils were the most for Duke against North Carolina at home in Durham since Oct. 28, 2010 (3).
- Oder became the first Blue Devil freshman to score against North Carolina since Michelle Cooper in 2021.
