PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Duke redshirt sophomore heavyweight
Connor Barket made his first appearance in the NCAA Wrestling Championship on Thursday at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa. Barket dropped a pair of matches to end his run in the championship.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In Connor Barket's opening bout against sixth-seeded Joshua Heindselman of Michigan, Barket was pinned 1:04 into the contest.
- Later that evening in the consolation bracket, Barket faced 11th-seeded Jimmy Mullen of Virginia Tech for the third time this season.Mullen netted a takedown in the first period, before Barket registered an escape to cut in the lead, 3-1, heading into the second period. Barket, who is from West Lafayette, Ind., totaled another escape to cut the lead to 3-2, but Mullen responded with another takedown to go ahead, 6-2. Barket added an escape to trail 6-3 going into the final period.
- In the third period, Mullen opened with an escape and the two heavyweights battled for the entire period. Barket registered a takedown with 12 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 7-6, but couldn't get anything in the final seconds.Mullen moved on with a 9-6 decision with a riding time point.
NOTES
- Connor Barket turned in a solid season with a 24-12 ledger and now owns 40 wins over the last two years as a Blue Devil. With two years remaining, the future is bright for Barket.
- Barket finished the year with 24 wins to rank as the fifth-most by a heavyweight since the 1999 campaign.
