RALEIGH, N.C. – No. 18 Duke rowing had a strong showing during day one of the Lake Wheeler Invitational behind six first-place finishes and four close second-place times.
No. 12 Virginia leads the 18-team field with 62 points heading into the second day of competition. Duke and Clemson follow closely behind with 59 and 55 points, respectively. No. 20 Columbia and Boston University each tallied 40 points to round out the top five.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first two races of the day, Duke's Third Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Four claimed back-to-back second-place finishes, crossing the line behind North Carolina to clock times of 6:59.347 and 7:33.528, respectively.
- In the Varsity Four race, the V4 crew of coxswain Lucy Herrick, Grace Matos, Vivienne Foley, Sophia Greco and Chelsea Proutt powered past their competition to register the winning time of 7:19.687. The Second Varsity Eight followed with another top finish, gliding past Clemson and North Carolina to finish in 6:41.116.
- The first heat of the Varsity Eight race was a tight battle between Duke, Clemson, North Carolina and Washington State that came down to the final 500 meters. All four teams finished within 1.5 seconds of each other. The Tigers took first while the Blue Devils were able to hold off the Cougars and Tar Heels for second place.
- The 3V8 kicked off the afternoon session with another second-place finish, coming in behind the first-place crew from Columbia to record a time of 6:58.207.
- The Blue Devils were strong in their remaining races on the day, collecting four first place finishes to move into second in the team standings.
