Jessica Oakland was named the player of the week while freshman
Gabriella Shadek was tabbed freshman of the week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Oakland had an explosive week at the plate, batting 12-for-16 (.750) with three doubles, four home runs and 14 RBI to lead the Duke offense. Her first home run of the week came during the midweek battle with the Lady Vols, sending out a three-run blast on the first pitch she saw, to lead the Blue Devils to a 6-3 victory. The San Jose, California, native capped off the week going 8-for-8 with three home runs and nine RBI during Saturday's doubleheader at Boston College to help Duke earn its fourth conference series sweep of the season.
In addition to her conference honors, Oakland was also recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) as the Division I Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week. The awards are voted on by the NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll Committee, which features one member coach from each of the NCAA's 31 conferences.
Shadek also played a major role in the Blue Devils' offense this weekend to earn her first ACC weekly honor. The freshman hit 7-for-14 (.500) with two doubles, three home runs, seven RBI and zero strikeouts. Shadek, a product of Kinnelon, New Jersey, hit a homer run in each of the three games at Boston College. She drove in a career-high four runs in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, using an RBI-double and a three-run homer in back-to-back innings, to help Duke clinch the three-game series against the Eagles.
The Blue Devils will close out the regular season at home, hosting Charlotte in non-conference action Tuesday before welcoming Clemson to Smith Family Stadium for a three-game series beginning Friday.
