DURHAM, N.C. - Former Duke running back Anderson Castle has agreed to terms with the Indianapolis Colts to join the NFL organization as an undrafted free agent.
Castle, a 6-0, 215-pound product of Watauga, North Carolina, lettered one season (2025) at Duke after arriving as a graduate transfer from Appalachian State University. He helped the Mountaineers to three bowl games (2020 Myrtle Beach, 2021 Boca Raton and 2023 Cure) and two Sun Belt Championship Game appearances (2021 and 2023). In his one season in Durham, he assisted in Duke claiming its first outright ACC Championship since 1962 and the 2025 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl crown. Â
In 68 career games (three starts), Castle totaled 308 carries for 1,524 yards (4.95) and 20 touchdowns with an additional 36 receptions for 252 yards (7.00) and a score. He logged 30 or more rushing yards on 21 occasions, 50 or more in 10 games and a career-high 119 against Miami in the 2023 Cure Bowl. Castle burst for a career-long 66-yard scamper against NC State in 2025. He carded two or more touchdowns in four games with a personal-best three versus NC State and North Carolina in 2025. He registered three or more receptions against James Madison (3) in 2023, East Carolina (5) in 2024, South Alabama (3) in 2024 and Tulane (6) in 2025 and accumulated a career-high 29 receiving yards at Tulane in 2025.Â
With Duke in 2025, Castle was the offensive recipient of the team's K.D. Kennedy Iron Devil Award as the Blue Devil who demonstrated the most heart, durability and toughness throughout the year. He played in all 14 games and rushed 115 times for 488 yards (4.24) and 12 touchdowns. He also caught 17 passes for 111 yards (6.53). On the Duke single-season record chart, Castle tied for fifth with 12 rushing scores. He joined Nate Sheppard (11) to form Duke's first ground attack that featured two or more backs with 10 or more touchdowns each. Castle also combined with Sheppard to catch 54 passes, tied for the eighth most by a Duke duo in program history.
Castle paced the squad in rushing touchdowns and finished second in rushing yards (754), third in points (72) and fifth in all-purpose yards (599). He turned in two 60+ yard rushes, one against Elon (63) and another versus NC State (66). He was a key piece of the Blue Devil offensive attack that set the program record for total touchdowns scored (63) and points scored (484) as well as a member of Duke's offense that ranked among the NCAA leaders in fourth down conversion percentage (.738; 4th), total first downs (316; 10th), passing yards per game (285.4; 10th), points per game (34.6; 16th) and total offense (423.5; 25th).
Castle rushed for 40 or more yards in five games including a season-high 92 yards on 12 carries against NC State. In Duke's three victories versus NC State, North Carolina and Wake Forest, Castle combined for 162 rushing yards and eight ground scores. He was named the September 22 ACC Running Back of the Week following the performance against the Wolfpack, when he became just the fifth Blue Devil, and second running back, since 1996 to rush for three or more scores in an ACC game. Since 1996, he is the only Duke running back with two, three-TD games in the same season. Castle also tied for second in program history with three rushing scores against North Carolina, trailing only Mike Dunn's four rushing scores versus the Tar Heels in 1976.Â
Castle graduated from Appalachian State in December 2024 with a degree in sports management.Â
