DURHAM, N.C. – Senior Kyle Massey scored a career-high two goals to help spearhead the ninth-ranked Duke field hockey team to a 5-1 victory over James Madison Friday evening at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.

Massey's brace powered the Duke offense, which outshot JMU 16-4 for the game and drew seven penalty corners to the Dukes' one. Juniors Ashley Stockdale and Callie Rogers, along with sophomore Shae Wozniak, also netted goals for the Blue Devils, with junior Julia Boehringer and Stockdale tallying assists.

Defensively, the Blue Devils (3-2) held JMU (0-4) scoreless and without a shot for more than three quarters. Junior goalkeeper Kaiya Chepow improved to 3-2 in the cage this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Duke came out aggressive in the first period, outshooting James Madison 5-0 through the opening 15 minutes. The Blue Devils got three shots on goal, finally breaking the seal with 40 seconds to play. Boehringer sent a pass in from the left side, and Wozniak was there to knock the ball into the bottom right corner of the cage for her first tally of the season and a 1-0 Duke lead.
The Blue Devils carried the momentum into the second period, peppering the Dukes with five more shots in the second stanza. Duke added two more goals at 20:44 and 26:39, respectively, to stretch the advantage to three.
Stockdale got things going with a centering pass towards the front of the net, and after corralling the ball from a bit of traffic, Massey slipped a shot past JMU keeper Lilly Sweeney. Stockdale once again had her fingerprints on Duke's next score, but this time the junior called her own number with a stickback in the 27th minute.
Duke found the back of the cage for the fourth time, with Massey netting her second goal of the contest towards the end of the third quarter. Graduate student Alaina McVeigh started the sequence by stealing a lackadaisical pass from JMU in the Dukes' own defensive third, leading to a breakaway opportunity. McVeigh's initial shot attempt was blocked, but the ball bounced to Massey in the circle and the senior rifled a backhand shot past Sweeney to give Duke a 4-0 ledger in the 40th minute.
James Madison denied the Blue Devils' shutout bid with a score early in the fourth period. After the first attempt was saved by junior netminder Alessia Cicuto, Elena Giangaspero was there for the rebound at 46:14 to get the Dukes on the board.
Rogers joined in on the scoring action and put the finishing touches on the victory with a goal at the 59:05 mark. The junior used some great stick work to evade the defense and split a double team before going top shelf for the Blue Devils' fifth goal of the contest.

GAME NOTES:

The Blue Devils snap a two-game skid and improve to 3-2 overall on the season.
Duke has won three straight against JMU and now leads the all-time series, 25-12-1.
Head coach Pam Bustin earns her 191st victory at Duke and 353rd overall.
Kyle Massey netted a career-high two goals, pushing her season total to three. It marks the first multi-goal game of her Duke career.
Ashley Stockdale posted a goal and added an assist to finish with a game-high three points. The junior has scored in each game this season and owns six on the year.
Callie Rogers scored for the second time in her last three games.
Shae Wozniak tallied her first goal this season.
