Marshall Ray enters his first season as an assistant coach with the Blue Devils' men’s soccer team. While at Duke, he will assist with recruiting, player development and day-to-day operations of the program.
Ray comes to Duke with four years of experience at the Division I level. He spent four seasons at Drury University, including the past two years as the program’s head coach. At the time of his hiring, he was the youngest head coach in Division I at the age of 25. As the coach at Drury, in addition to the traditional responsibilities of a head coach, he met the unique challenge of managing a Division I program at a Division II school.
During his time at Drury, Ray also served as staff coach of the Tracker Soccer Club out of Springfield, Mo. His responsibilities included creating individualized training sessions and arranging training of the players by members of the Drury squad.
Prior to coaching, Ray played professional soccer with the Nashville Metros in the spring of 2001. While playing with the Metros, he served as an instructor at the team’s youth soccer camps.
A 2000 graduate of the University of Evansville, Ray played four years for the Purple Aces. He was a member of the 1996 Missouri Valley Conference Championship team which went on to face Indiana in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. He was a central defender and striker and was named MVC offensive and defensive player of the week during his career at Evansville. He was awarded the Ian Coull Memorial Award for competitive spirit and teamwork and was also selected to the NSCAA Scholar Athlete All-Region team.
