Mike Irving enters his first season as a volunteer assistant coach for the Blue Devils. He currently serves as Duke’s Club Wrestling Coach after a stellar collegiate and post-collegiate career.
A native of Florida, Irving was a four-time All-American at University of Cumberlands. He won a national title as a heavyweight in 2000 and was the national runner-up in both 1999 and 2001 at 197 pounds.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in 2002, Irving went on to wrestle professionally in Florida. While working as a high school teacher, he wrestled part time and experienced some success. He captured runner-up honors at the Sunkist International Open, seventh at the US Open, and fifth at the World Team Trials.
Following that success, Irving decided to pursue a dream of wrestling in the Olympics and trained at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Irving left the training center one year before the Olympics were to begin due to family reasons and started teaching in Durham and chose Duke as his training site. He worked closely with Anderson and became the leader of the Club Wrestling program before joining the Blue Devils staff this season.
