Matthew Keane joined Duke Athletics as Director of Compliance in 2024, bringing over a decade of experience in NCAA compliance and a deep understanding of NCAA legislation. In his role, Keane oversees the daily operations of the compliance office, focusing on rules education and student-athlete eligibility.
Prior to joining Duke, Keane served as the Senior Director of Compliance at NC State. In this capacity, he was the primary compliance liaison for 12 sports, overseeing the interpretation of NCAA Division One bylaws and facilitating rules education for the university's athletics department. He also developed new ARMS workflows for critical compliance areas including recruiting, amateurism, financial aid and student-athlete eligibility.
Before his tenure at NC State, Keane was the Director of Compliance at Towson University from April 2016 to February 2018, where he managed compliance for 19 sports. During a period of staffing reductions, he established and led an internship program that maintained the department’s efficiency and compliance integrity.
Keane’s earlier roles included positions at Georgetown University as Assistant Director of Compliance, where he coordinated compliance support for 29 sports, and at Colgate University as a Compliance Assistant.
He holds a Master of Science in Sports Administration from Canisius College and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from NC State.
