CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Duke's freshmen duo of Amanda Johnson and Ansley
Cargill each advanced to the second round of the Carolina Classic on Friday
morning at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Johnson defeated Jen Turchband of Virginia (6-1, 6-1), while Cargill won 6-0, 6-2 over Ashley Rimel of UNC Greensboro. On Saturday Johnson will take on Kerstin Stockinger of Campbell and Cargill will play Heniette Williams of Virginia. Other singles play on Saturday will feature Hillary Adams versus Laura James of Virginia and Ioana Plesu versus Patty Devlin of Richmond. Both Adams and Plesu received a bye in the first round.
Duke's doubles duo of Megan Miller and Johnson swept two matches on the afternoon as they knocked off Doncheva/Stockinger of Campbell (8-2) and Schweer/Williams of Virginia (8-4). Miller/Johnson will take on Mejia/Rotondi of North Carolina in the final eight of doubles play Saturday.
The doubles team of Cargill and Adams also advanced by defeating Ciulei/Dumitrescu of Virginia Commonwealth, after receiving a bye in the first round. The duo will next play Bairos/Neibling of North Carolina on Saturday in the final eight.
