DURHAM, N.C. - The No.3-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels defeated the No. 5-seeded Duke Blue Devils 4-0 to win their 12th consecutive ACC Women's Soccer Championship at Koskinen Stadium on Sunday. North Carolina has now won every championship since 1989. Duke has now appeared in four championship games, second only to North Carolina.
"We are thrilled to be conference champion again, especially in a season where we took some hits with the three losses," said North Carolina head coach Anson Dorrance. "Today and throughout the ACC Tournament, we played with our hearts and for each other."
North Carolina dominated the first half, allowing no shots and only one corner kick by the Blue Devils. The Tar Heels jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fourteenth minute of the game when freshman Alyssa Ramsey scored on a pass from senior Meredith Florance. North Carolina increased the lead to 2-0 when Florance fed a pass to freshman Jordan Walker, who then beat Duke goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir at 20:14.
The Tar Heels continued their dominance in the second half, scoring two goals. Senior Kalli Kamholz gave North Carolina a 3-0 lead when she headed home junior Jena Kluegel's corner kick at 51:02. The Tar Heels sealed the victory at 77:09 when junior Anne Remy beat Helgadottir with a header. Remy was assisted on the play by Ramsey and Walker.
"We knew coming into the tournament that we had to take one game at a time, come out hard, and score early," said North Carolina senior defender Julia Marslender.
North Carolina sophomore goalkeeper Jenni Branam made one save as the Tar Heels picked up their eighth shutout of the season.
"I am really proud of our kids," said Duke head coach Bill Hempen. "A lot of people did not give us a chance to get to this point, and in the process we knocked off the number-one seed."
With the win, North Carolina improved to 16-3, while Duke falls to 13-7-1. The Tar Heels received an automatic bid to the 2000 NCAA Tournament with the win. The complete tournament bracket will be announced at 10 p.m. tonight and televised on Home Team Sports.
