PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. - Duke's 37th-ranked doubles duo of junior Julie DeRoo (Ecully, France) and freshman Kelly McCain (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) advanced to the main draw of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Riviera All-American on Wednesday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The duo downed Ashley Hedburgh/Martina Nedorostova of Texas A&M (8-5) and 17th-ranked Claire Carter/Darija Klaic of Washington (8-6) to advance through the qualifying rounds Wednesday. In the match against Washington, DeRoo/McCain were down 5-1 before mounting an impressive comeback to post the victory.
Duke's 30th-ranked tandem of sophomore Amanda Johnson (Bettendorf, Iowa) and freshman Susie Abromeit (Boca Raton, Fla.) won their first match on Wednesday over 18th-ranked Marlene Mejia/Julie Rotondi of North Carolina (8-2) before falling to Linda Faltynova/Katarzyna of Oklahoma State (5-8).
Freshman Saras Arasu's impressive run at the Riviera came to a close on Wednesday as the Tampa, Fla. product fell to 27th-ranked Carolina Mayorga of Kentucky (7-5, 7-6) in the final round of qualifying. Arasu had won five consecutive matches prior to the loss.
The Blue Devils have three other singles players remaining and will play in the main draw beginning Thursday--Johnson (No. 9), DeRoo (No. 21) and McCain (No. 49).
During the season, the ITA hosts three national collegiate championships with the Riviera All-American being the first one of the season. The second is the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Dallas and the final is the NCAA Championships.
