PACIFIC PALISADES, calif. - Freshman Kelly McCain's run at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Riviera All-American was halted on Saturday as the Wesley Chapel, Fla. product fell to fourth-ranked Nataly Cahana of Old Dominion (4-6, 3-6) at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
McCain, 49th in the preseason ITA rankings, became the second consecutive Duke freshman to advance to the semifinals of the Riviera All-American (Ansley Cargill). Junior transfer Julie DeRoo (Ecully, France) picked up a win Saturday over 70th-ranked Jennifer McGaffigan of Illinois (6-1, 6-0) and will take on 64th-ranked Darija Klaic of Washington at 9:00 AM (PT) in the consolation singles final Sunday. DeRoo is ranked 21st in the preseason rankings.
"It has been good to see the team play well this week," said Ashworth. "We came back real strong after a poor showing last week at the Adidas Tennis Classic. We have had excellent play from a number of players like freshmen Saras Arasu, Kelly McCain, Amanda Johnson and Julie DeRoo. This is a very strong start for us this fall."
During the season, the ITA hosts three national collegiate championships with the Riviera All-American being the first one of the season. The second is the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Dallas and the final is the NCAA Championships.
