Duke Loses Heartbreaker in Overtime to No. 13 Virginia, 2-1

Virginia freshman forward Lindsay Gusick scored 9:36 into the first sudden-death overtime period to lift the No. 13 Cavaliers to a 2-1 victory over Duke Saturday night at Koskinen Stadium. The loss drops the Blue Devils to 5-8 on the season and 0-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while Virginia improves to 11-2-1 overall and 3-1 in the ACC.

Gusick's goal came after Duke was unable to clear a Virginia corner kick. Cavalier sophomore midfielder Erin Engelhardt fired a pass from the left side to Gusick, who rifled a shot past Blue Devil sophomore goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir for the game-winner.

Virginia got on the board first with just six seconds remaining in the first half after a Cavalier shot was deflected right to junior midfielder Meredith Rhodes who had an open net on the left side for the score.

Duke's only goal of the game came at the 70:10 mark when senior midfielder Kasey Truman got control of a loose ball in front of the Virginia net and fired a shot past Cavalier sophomore goalkeeper Jodi Clugston. The goal was the first of the season for Truman, who missed all of last season and the first 10 games this season with separate knee injuries.

Helgadottir was stellar in net for the Blue Devils, stopping nine shots including one three minutes into overtime. Virginia senior midfielder Lori Lindsey fed a pass to a wide-open Gusick on the left side. With Helgadottir hugging the right goal post, Gusick got a shot off to the goalkeeper's left, but Helgadottir turned the shot away and was able to clear the ball.

The Blue Devils return to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Raleigh to take on N.C. State at 7:00 p.m.
