WINSTON-SALEM,N.C. - Duke's doubles duo of Hillary Adams (New York, N.Y.) and Saras Arasu (Tampa, Fla.) won its first round match Thursday in the 2001 Omni Hotels Southeast Regional Championships at the Indoor Tennis Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Adams/Arasu are seeded 13th and knocked off Beaulier/Finkowski from Appalachian State (8-3) and will next take on South Carolina's Kenoyer/Wojdylo on Friday at 2:00 PM in the second round. USC's team of Kenoyer/Wojdylo defeated Johnson/Madyun of N.C. A&T (8-2) to advance.
Duke's singles action will begin on Friday, sophomore Amanda Johnson is seeded first and will play Katie Martzolf of Wake Forest at 8:00 AM, Julie DeRoo is seeded fourth and will play a qualifier at 11:30 AM, Susie Abromeit will battle sixth-seeded Julie Rotondi of North Carolina at 10:30 AM, Ioana Plesu will take on 16th-seeded Aniela Mojzis of North Carolina at 9:00 AM, Arasu will go up against Kentucky's Carolina Mayorga at 10:00 AM and Adams will take on second-seeded Janet Bergman of Wake Forest at 8:00 AM.
Duke will have two other doubles teams competing in the regionals. The teams of DeRoo/Kelly McCain (seeded third) and Abromeit/Johnson (seeded fifth) will kick off action on Friday after receiving a bye in the first round.
In the preseason rankings, Duke's Johnson is ninth and DeRoo is 21st in singles, while in doubles Abromeit/Johnson is 30th and DeRoo/McCain is 37th.
