Duke senior midfielder Kasey Truman scored at the 22:20 mark of the first half to lead the Blue Devils to a 2-0 upset victory over 19th-ranked Wake Forest Saturday night at Koskinen Stadium. It was the second consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference victory for Duke this week after they were winless in their first five conference games this season.
Truman's goal came after senior forward Sarah Pickens battled through two Demon Deacon defenders on the left side and found a wide-open Truman, who fired a shot just to the right of Wake Forest junior goalkeeper Erin Regan. Regan got a piece of the ball, but it dribbled past her for the score.
Freshman midfielder Casey McCluskey added an insurance goal for Duke with just under 20 minutes to play, which came off a pass from Truman.
Sophomore goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir was spectacular once again for the Blue Devils, stopping seven shots on the night, several at point-blank range.
"Early in the match we were executing our game plan very well, but were unable to capitalize on our chances," said Duke head coach Robbie Church. "We moved the ball much quicker in the second half and were able to capitalize on our chances and their mistakes. This win puts us back into the chase and gives us a lot of momentum going into our last game and the ACC tournament."
With the victory, the Blue Devils improved to 7-8 overall and 2-5 in the ACC, while the Demon Deacons dropped to 7-6-1 and 3-3 in the conference.
The win came on Senior Night for Duke, as the team honored Truman and Pickens, forward Alison Sanders and defenders Crystal Pressley, Stefanie Kraay and Katie Heaps as they each played in their last home match.
The Blue Devils will finish off regular their regular season when they travel to Nashville, Tenn., to take on Vanderbilt on November 3rd at 7:00 p.m.
