WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.. - Senior Ioana Plesu (Saint-Foy, Quebec, Canada) and junior Julie DeRoo (Ecully, France) each advanced to the singles quarterfinals of the Omni Hotels Southeast Regional Championship on Saturday played on the campus of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.
DeRoo defeated Laurence Jayet of Clemson University (6-1, 6-1), while Plesu knocked off Monica Gonzalez-Gordo of the University of Memphis (6-2, 6-1). DeRoo will battle 12th-seeded Agnes Wiski of Tennessee and Plesu will go up against third-seeded Alison Ojeda of Tennessee on Sunday at 9:00 AM.
In doubles action, Duke's third-seeded duo of Kelly McCain/DeRoo advanced to the semifinals by defeating 11th-seeded Dunigan/The from Furman University (8-1) and seventh-seeded Kruse/Varnell of Middle Tennessee State University (8-5). The duo will next take on second-seeded Mayorga/Witten of Kentucky Sunday at 1:30 PM.
Duke's two other doubles teams competing fell in the quarterfinals-- fifth-seeded Amanda Johnson/Susie Abromeit fell to 15th-seeded Buckley/Trefethen of Kentucky (8-9) and 13th-seeded Hillary Adams/Saras Arasu lost to second-seeded Mayorga/Witten of Kentucky (3-8).
In the preseason rankings, Duke's Johnson is ninth and DeRoo is 21st in singles, while in doubles Abromeit/Johnson is 30th and DeRoo/McCain is 37th.
