LOS ANGELES, calif. - Duke freshman Saras Arasu (Tampa, Fla.) continued her outstanding play on Tuesday by winning two singles matches to advance to the final qualifying round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Riviera All-American at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The native of Tampa, Fla., defeated 38th-ranked Christina Fusano of California (6-4, 4-6, 6-3) and Alice Pirsu of Pennsylvania (6-3, 6-4) Tuesday. She will take on 27th-ranked Carolina Mayorga of Kentucky Wednesday. Arasu has now won five consecutive matches at the Riviera All-American. Duke's junior Hillary Adams (New York, N.Y.) was able to advance to qualifying, but lost both matches Tuesday to Chloe Carlotti of Fresno State (0-6, 4-6) and Anita Loyola of Southern California (3-6, 3-6).
The Blue Devils have three other singles players remaining and will play in the main draw beginning Thursday--sophomore Amanda Johnson (Bettendorf, Iowa), freshman Kelly McCain (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and junior Julie DeRoo (Ecully, France).
In doubles action, the duos McCain/DeRoo and Johnson/Susie Abromeit each kicked off their action with victories on Tuesday. McCain/DeRoo downed Paola Arrangoiz/Heather Polumbus of San Diego (8-5), while Johnson/Abromeit knocked off Washington's Coline Gray/Erin Hoe (8-4).
The Blue Devils boast three ranked singles players-- Johnson (No. 9), DeRoo (No. 21) and McCain (No. 49). In doubles, Duke has two duos ranked-- Johnson/Abromeit (No. 30) and McCain/DeRoo (No. 37).
During the season, the ITA hosts three national collegiate championships with the Riviera All-American being the first one of the season. The second is the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Dallas and the final is the NCAA Championships.
