Third-Ranked Duke Downs Virginia Commonwealth 6-1 Sunday

DURHAM, N.C. - The third-ranked Duke women's tennis team downed 38th-ranked Virginia Commonwealth 6-1 on Sunday in its 2001 home opener in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C. Prior to the match, Duke was awarded the 2000 United States Tennis Association (USTA) Outstanding Tennis Facility.
The Blue Devils (6-1) began the action taking all three doubles matches as the third-ranked duo of Megan Miller (Palm City, Fla.) and Amanda Johnson (Bettendorf, Iowa) knocked off Martina Nedelkova/Raluca Ciulei 8-4 and 38th-ranked Ansley Cargill (Atlanta, Ga.) and Kathy Sell (Moorestown, N.J.) defeated Silvia Urickova/Jana Carollo 8-4. Duke's other doubles team of Katie Granson (Bethlehem, Pa.) and Hillary Adams (New York, N.Y.) won by default at the No. 3 position.
In singles play, Cargill, who is currently ranked first nationally, posted her 15th victory over a ranked opponent as she won easily 6-4, 6-4 over sixth-ranked Nedelkova at the No. 1 spot. At No. 2 and No. 3 singles, 15th-ranked Johnson downed Anca Dumitrescu (3-6, 7-5, 6-2) and Miller cruised past Ciulei (6-0, 6-4).
Sell, a senior ranked seventh nationally, played at the No. 4 spot but fell 3-6, 7-5, 0-1 to Urickova. Sell battled back after falling in the first set and was down 2-5 in the second before coming back to even the match. Since the overall match was already clinched by Duke, the match was concluded on a one set tiebreaker.
Picking up Duke's other two wins were Granson and Adams at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions respectively. Granson knocked off Carollo (6-0, 7-5) and Adams won by default. VCU fell to 3-2 on the season.
Duke will next travel to Champaign, Ill. to battle 33rd-ranked Illinois. Match time is set for 12:00 PM. The Blue Devils will be on the road for the next five matches before hosting William & Mary on Mar. 22 at 1:30 PM.
