Senior Megan Miller posted the match-clinching victory with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at number three singles over 80th-ranked Maren Haus and was selected Most Valuable Player with the win. It marks the second consecutive MVP award for the native of Palm City, Fla.
The match began with the Blue Devils taking the number two and three doubles matches to take the 1-0 lead on the match. The duo of Kathy Sell/Katie Granson quickly downed Jackie Houston/Elizabeth Proctor, 8-3, at number two and Amanda Johnson/Hillary Adams posted an 8-5 victory over Haus/Aimee Smith at the number three spot.
Singles action began a little rocky for the Blue Devils as Duke trailed early on three courts, but Duke rebounded to take the fourth position as 23rd-ranked Sell posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Houston to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead. Wake Forest came back to cut the Duke lead to 2-1 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the second position by 24th-ranked Bergman over 13th-ranked Johnson.
That point by the Demon Deacons would be the last of the day as the Blue Devils next received a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the number five slot by Granson over Proctor. This gave Duke a commanding 3-1 lead and Miller finished off the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Haus.
"We are very excited," said Duke Head Coach Jamie Ashworth. "We didn't play our best today, but we competed great. Ansley [Cargill] did a good job keeping Bea [Bielik] on the court longer. If that match ended up being a quicker match, Wake Forest gets two pretty quick wins and that could of changed to put pressure in different places. Four and five did a great job taking the pressure off of Megan [Miller] and Prim [Siripipat]."
Duke will now wait for NCAA Tournament action, which will begin May 11-13 with the first and second rounds.
"It is good for her confidence and going into the NCAAs," said Ashworth. "She has had an up and down year as started the year ranked top 10 in the country and fell down. She deserves it and has worked hard the last four years."
