The Duke Blue Devils surged for two late goals in the final ten minutes of the game to fend off Old Dominion this evening, 3-1. With the win, Duke improves to 4-3 while the Lady Monarchs fall to 3-4-1.
Duke took an early 1-0 lead thanks to freshman forward Casey McCluskey, who scored her first goal of the game off of a corner kick at the 30 minute mark. Ten minutes after halftime, ODU's Jen Henley tied the game with her second goal of the season. Henley took a free kick that curled in past Duke freshman goalie Katie Straka and deflected off a Blue Devil defender into the goal.
The Blue Devils responded by making numerous runs at the Old Dominion goal, but were frustrated several times by Lady Monarch goalie Tonya Dedmond, who recorded five of her seven saves in the second half.
Duke senior forward Sarah Pickens finally scored the game-winner for her side in the 82nd minute. McCluskey followed that up with her second goal of the evening just one minute later, following through on a breakaway and drawing Dedmond out of the goal before delivering the strike. Both of Duke's final scores were unassisted.
Duke outshot Old Dominion 14-6, including 9-3 in the second half. The visitors also held a 11-2 edge in corners.
The Blue Devils return to action on Tuesday when they take on No. 1 North Carolina at Koskinen Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
