CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Penn State junior forward Christie Welsh scored three goals and registered an assist as #8 Penn State defeated #19 Duke 5-1 in the first game of the Nike Carolina Classic at Fetzer Field on Friday evening.
Duke freshman goalkeeper Katie Straka recorded five saves in her Blue Devil debut, while senior forward Sarah Pickens scored the lone goal for Duke.
Pickens's goal came after a rebound shot by junior forward Brigid Bowdell ricocheted off Penn State defender Gillian Samuel, who inadvertently hit the post. Pickens controlled the rebound and fired a shot past senior goalkeeper Emily Oleksiuk for the goal.
The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 1-2 (0-1 ACC) on the season, while Penn State improved to 2-1 (0-0 Big Ten).
Duke returns to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. for its last match of the classic vs. Charlotte, while Penn State takes on host North Carolina at 3 p.m.
