BURNSVILLE, MINN. - On Friday, the third-ranked Duke women's tennis team opened its 2002 spring campaign with a 7-0 sweep of Marquette in the Minnesota Court Classic at the Northwest Athletic Club in Burnsville, Minn.
The other first round match with 23rd-ranked Kentucky versus the host Minnesota Gophers is scheduled for 6:00 PM (CT) Friday evening. Duke will take on the winner of the other first round match on Saturday at 4:00 PM (CT) for the championship.
"It was good to get out and play another team," said Duke Head Coach Jamie Ashworth. "We have been practicing for three weeks and we needed to get a match under our belt before going up against a nationally ranked opponent Saturday."
The Blue Devils cruised through singles action without losing a set. Third-ranked freshman Kelly McCain played number one for the Blue Devils as she defeated Gen Charron (6-1, 6-3). It marks the second consecutive season a freshman has opened the season at the number one position for Duke (Ansley Cargill in 2001).
Sophomore Amanda Johnson and junior Julie DeRoo each recorded victories at the second and third positions, respectively. The 26th-ranked Johnson knocked off Eva Trujillo (6-2, 6-0) and 15th-ranked DeRoo downed Vero Vrisneo (6-2, 7-5). Senior Ioana Plesu, freshman Saras Arasu and junior Hillary Adams each also recorded singles wins Friday.
The Blue Devils rolled through doubles play as McCain/Johnson knocked off Charron/Vrisneo (8-2), Adams/DeRoo defeated Pavlovic (8-1) and Plesu/Katie Granson won 8-1 over LaValley/Belle Espinosa.
