Johnson, McCain Advance In Singles At ITA Riviera All-American

PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. - Junior Amanda Johnson and sophomore Kelly McCain each advanced to the second round of singles action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Riviera All-American on Thursday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Johnson, ranked 16th-nationally from Bettendorf, Iowa, knocked off seventh-ranked Erin Burdette of Stanford (6-3, 6-4) and next will take on 30th-ranked Zerene Reyes of Florida on Friday. A Tampa, Fla. product, McCain downed Dora Krstulovic of Arizona State (6-3, 6-0) and will next take on Alice Pirsu of Pennsylvania in round two. McCain, ranked fifth-nationally, advanced to the semifinals last year as a freshman.

Senior 28th-ranked Julie DeRoo (Ecully, France) fell in the first round, 6-2, 1-6, 4-6, to 67th-ranked Amber Liu from Stanford. DeRoo then defeated Burdette from Stanford in the first round of consolation singles action by walkover.

In doubles action, the 18th-ranked tandem of DeRoo/Johnson fell to eighth-ranked Agata Cioroch/Lori Grey from Georgia (8-3) and Hillary Adams/McCain fell, 9-7, to second-ranked Tiffany Brymer/Jewel Peterson of Southern California. Both doubles teams will play in the consolation bracket on Friday.
