LOS ANGLES, CALIF.-Duke University senior Katie Granson and freshman Julia Smith each advanced to the third round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Riviera All-American Pre-Qualifying competition on Saturday on the campus of UCLA in Los Angeles, Calif.
Granson, a product of Bethlehem, Pa., knocked off Karla Mancinas of TCU (6-1, 6-0) and Bernadette Bayani of Southern California (6-1, 6-4) on day one. Smith, a native of Windlesham, England, also won two matches over Lauren Colalillo of Arizona State (6-4, 7-5) and Margarita Karnaukhova of Sacramento State (6-1, 6-4).
On Sunday, Smith will battle Nathalie Roels of Kentucky and Granson will play Renate Stoop of Boise State. The winners of Sunday's match will advance to the qualifying round, which will begin on Tuesday.
In doubles action, Smith and Granson teamed together to knock off Hollands/Pouliot of Arizona (8-1), while Duke's duo of Saras Arasu/Katie Blaszak fell to Gregg/Loncaric of UCLA (8-4).
