LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - Duke University freshman Julia Smith (Windlesham, England) advanced to the qualifying round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Riviera All-American on Sunday by defeating Nathalie Roels of Kentucky, 6-4, 6-2, in Los Angeles, Calif.
Smith, ranked 99th in the preseason ITA rankings, will now face 44th-ranked Daria Panova of Oregon on Tuesday at 12:00 PM (EST) in the qualifying round. In other singles action, senior Katie Granson (Bethlehem, Pa.) fell to Renate Stoop of Boise State (6-0, 5-7, 3-6).
Duke's doubles tandem of Granson/Smith won their first match on Sunday, 9-7, over Mijic/Potapova from Baylor and then knocked off Anderson/Wang from Harvard (8-1).
The other singles and doubles qualifying round draws have been released and will begin on Tuesday at 12:00 PM (EST).
