PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. - Duke University seniors Julie DeRoo and Katie Granson each advanced to the third round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Riviera All-American Qualifying on Tuesday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Granson, a senior native of Bethlehem, Pa., knocked off 54th-ranked Danira Penic of Temple (6-3, 6-4) and 71st-ranked Melissa Iqbal of Purdue to improve to 6-3 on the season. Granson received admission to qualifying as a lucky loser from the pre-qualifying round. DeRoo, from Ecully, France, defeated 52nd-ranked Jessica Rush of Northwestern (6-2, 6-1) and 72nd-ranked Patty Aburto of TCU (6-1, 6-1).
In other Blue Devil action, 47th-ranked Saras Arasu (Tampa, Fla.) defeated Colleen Gray of Washington (6-1, 6-4) before falling to 41st-ranked Mari Toro of Miami (Fla.), 1-6, 4-6. Freshman 99th-ranked Julia Smith (Windlesham, England) knocked off 44th-ranked Daria Panova of Oregon (3-6, 6-4, 6-2) and then fell 5-7, 5-7 to 61st-ranked Candice Fuchs from William & Mary. Duke sophomore Katie Blaszak, who is ranked 87th nationally, also fell to 71st-ranked Iqbal of Purdue (6-3, 6-7, 4-6) in the first round.
Two of Duke's doubles teams were still competing on Tuesday night with results not released yet--

Katie Granson/Julia Smith (Duke) vs. Maureen Diaz/Anita Loyal (USC)
The final round of qualifying will take play on Wednesday beginning at 12:00 PM (EST).
