Julie DeRoo, Duke Doubles Advances To Main Draw At Riviera All-American

PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. - Senior 28th-ranked Julie DeRoo won her third match at the qualifying stage of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Riviera All-American on Wednesday to advance to the main draw which begins on Thursday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
DeRoo, an Ecully, France product, knocked off 40th-ranked Jennifer McGaffigan of Illinois by a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 score. Last season, DeRoo won four matches in the main draw consolation bracket to bring home the title.
In other singles action, senior Katie Granson fell to 67th-ranked Amber Liu from Stanford (1-6, 1-6) to end an excellent showing for the Bethlehem, Pa. native.
The Duke 18th-ranked tandem of DeRoo/Amanda Johnson also advanced to the main draw after knocking off 36th-ranked Candice Fuchs/Kate Boomershine from William & Mary (walkover, inj.) and 10th-ranked Stacy Varnell/Manon Kruse of Middle Tennessee State (8-6). The Blue Devil duo of Julia Smith/Katie Granson won their first match on Wednesday, 8-6, over 39th-ranked Millie Begovic/Robin Stephenson from Alabama, but fell in the second match, 6-8, to 26th-ranked Alexis Gordon/Julia Scaringe from Florida.
