DURHAM, N.C. - On Saturday, the fourth-ranked Duke women's tennis team crushed the 66th-ranked Princeton Tigers, 7-0, in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center to improve to 7-1 on the season.
The Blue Devils got off to a strong start winning the doubles point as Duke only lost five total points in three matches. Duke's number one duo of Kelly McCain and Amanda Johnson downed Kavitha Krishnamurthy/Kristi Watson (8-1) to improve to 5-3 on the season. The Blue Devils also received wins from Hillary Adams/Ioana Plesu (8-3) and Katie Granson/Susie Abromeit (8-1).
In singles action, Duke once again started strong with quick victories at the No. 3, 4, 6 positions to clinch the match for the Blue Devils. Leading the charge was Granson, a junior native of Bethlehem, Pa., as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Jackie Arcario at the No. 4 position. After receiving her first national ranking of 81 on Friday, Plesu downed Stephanie Berg (6-1, 6-2) at the third slot. Plesu, a senior product of Saint-Foy, Quebec, Canada owns a 14-4 record this season.
Arasu, a freshman from Tampa, Fla, had the honor of clinching the victory for Duke at the sixth position with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kristen Carlin. Other singles wins for the Blue Devils were notched by Johnson, Adams and McCain.
Duke will conclude a three-game homestand next Sunday as the Blue Devils will host Illinois on Mar. 3 (10:00 AM). The Illinois match is scheduled to be played outside in the new Ambler Tennis Stadium, which will be the first women's tennis match in the stadium.
