MADISON, WISC. - The second-ranked Duke women's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Women's Team Indoor Championships on Thursday by knocking off 18th-ranked Oklahoma State (2-1), 7-0, at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wisc.
Duke (4-0) will next take on 16th-ranked North Carolina, who defeated ninth-ranked Fresno State, on Friday at 3:30 PM (CT). It marks the seventh year in a row the Blue Devils have advanced to the quarterfinals in Madison and Duke owns an 11-2 all-time record in USTA/ITA National Team Indoor first round matches.
The Blue Devils opened the match by taking the doubles point as Kelly McCain/Amanda Johnson downed Ashleigh Dolman/Dominka Olszewska (8-4) and Katie Granson/Ioana Plesu knocked off Katia Vasylyeva/Furtmayr (8-4). Duke's tandem of Hillary Adams/Julie DeRoo fell at the No. 1 spot to fifth-ranked Linda Faltynkova/Katia Kolodynska (9-8).
In singles action, Duke swept through play without losing a set. Leading the charge were third-ranked McCain with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Olszewska, 26th-ranked Johnson with a 6-4, 6-1 whipping of 65th-ranked Faltynkova and 15th-ranked DeRoo with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kolodynska at the top three spots respectively.
Granson, a junior native of Bethlehem, Pa., posted the match-clinching victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Furtmayr at the fifth position.
