LOS ANGELES, CALIF.- After falling behind 1-0 following doubles play, the eighth-ranked UCLA women's tennis team rallied to pull off its biggest victory of the season Tuesday, knocking off No. 4 Duke, 4-3 in a non-conference match at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the win, UCLA improves its record to 10-2 on the year, while the Blue Devils fall to 9-2.
With the score tied at 3-3, senior Catherine Hawley clinched the match for UCLA at No. 6 singles, where she defeated Duke's Katie Granson, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. It was the second time this season that Hawley clinched a match for UCLA, as she did the same thing in the Bruins' 4-3 victory over then-No. 7 Arizona State back on Feb. 22.
In the featured match of the day, fifth-ranked Megan Bradley of UCLA defeated third-ranked Kelly McCain of Duke, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Bradley has now won 11 of her last 12 matches while continuing to climb in the singles rankings.
At No. 2 singles, fourth-ranked Sara Walker needed three sets to defeat No. 37 Amanda Johnson of Duke, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. Also winning in singles for UCLA on Tuesday was No. 90 Petya Marinova, as she upset No. 17 Julie DeRoo, 6-1, 6-4.
The Blue Devils got rolling quickly in doubles action as Duke notched victories at the second and third positions to take a 1-0 lead early. Duke got wins from the duo of Amanda Johnson/Julie DeRoo over fifth-ranked Megan Bradley/Lauren Fisher (9-7) and the tandem of Katie Granson/Susie Abromeit over Catherine Hawley/Sarah Gregg (8-1). The Bruins knocked off Duke's doubles team of Kelly McCain/Hillary Adams with an 8-1 victory from Carolina Mayorga/Sara Walker.
Duke will be at home for the five matches in a row. The Blue Devils will first take on seventh-ranked Texas on Saturday, March 16 at 1:00 PM.
