DURHAM, N.C. -- After a brief rain delay the fourth-ranked Duke Blue Devils defeated seventh-ranked Texas in women's tennis action at the Ambler Tennis Stadium on Saturday afternoon to improve to 10-2 on the season. It was the first home outdoor match for the Blue Devils this season.
Duke took the early lead in the match, winning the doubles point after capturing victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The No. 2 doubles duo of Julie DeRoo and Amanda Johnson defeated Kaysie Smasher and Lindsay Blau 8-4. Also winning for the Blue Devils was Katie Granson and Susie Abromeit. They defeated Rebekah Forney and Michelle Krinke 8-3.
In singles play, Texas captured the first point with a victory at the No. 6 position. Duke rallied, receiving victories at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 positions. Duke Freshman Kelly McCain won her match over Vladka Uhlirova 6-4, 6-1. Sophomore Amanda Johnson cruised to victory over Joanne Masongsong 6-2, 6-2 while Saras Arasu clinched the Duke victory with her win over Forney 6-3, 6-4. Also winning for Duke was Julie DeRoo who battled Katherine Ruckert in three sets. DeRoo won the match 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
The victory against Texas begins the Blue Devils' five match home stand. Duke will host N.C.State on March 20 at 5:00 p.m.
