DURHAM, N.C. -- Not even a change of courts could slow down the seventh-ranked Duke women's tennis team on Wednesday as the Blue Devils blanked N.C. State, 7-0, in a match that began outside at the Ambler Tennis Stadium and finished in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The Blue Devils opened Atlantic Coast Conference action with a victory and improved to 11-2 overall, while N.C. State fell to 6-7, 0-4 ACC.
Duke improves to 39-0 all-time against N.C. State and the Wolfpack have not scored a point against the Blue Devils since the 1996-97 season.
The Blue Devils quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead winning all three doubles matches. Duke's tandem of Katie Granson/Susie Abromeit knocked off Landis Strader/Loni Worsley (8-2) at the third position and then the number one duo of Hillary Adams/Kelly McCain downed Katrina Gildemeister (8-4) to clinch the point. The Blue Devil number two team of 60th-ranked Amanda Johnson/Julie DeRoo also defeated Myrna Bawono/Jennifer Jassawalla (8-3). It marked the sixth consecutive match Duke has won the doubles point.
In singles action at the fifth position, Granson of Duke rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Loni Worsley in less than an hour to put the Blue Devils up 2-0. McCain, ranked fourth-nationally, and senior Ioana Plesu (Saint-Foy, Quebec, Canada) put the Blue Devils up 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 thumping of Gildemeister and 6-0, 6-1 win over Bawono, respectively.
Freshman Saras Arasu (Tampa, Fla.) won her seventh consecutive singles match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jassawalla at the fourth position, while Abromeit downed Danielle Staddelmann, 6-1, 6-1, at number six. At the second position, DeRoo battled back from being down 3-0 in the first set to win the match 6-4, 6-3 over Nicholls.
Duke will next host third-ranked Florida on Friday at the Ambler Tennis Stadium at 3:00 PM.
