WILLIAMSBURG, VA (March 28, 2002)-William and Mary's 11th-ranked women's tennis team lost to No. 4 Duke, 6-1, this evening in Williamsburg in the first match ever played on the Tribe's new outdoor courts. The loss drops W&M's record to 12-5, while the Blue Devils improve to 14-3.
The only win for the College came at No. 4 singles, as freshman Lena Sherbakov (Mountain View, CA) defeated Ioana Plesu, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (7). Two other singles matches went into three sets, with #39 Amanda Johnson defeating rookie Candice Fuchs (Sarasota, FL), 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2, and #64 Sara Arasu winning against freshman Amy Wei (Marietta, GA), 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (7) at No. 5.
Blue Devil freshman Kelly McCain continued her stellar play with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over 60th-ranked Jessyca Arthur at the top position.
Duke will next battle Notre Dame on Monday, April 1 at 4:00 PM.
