DURHAM, N.C. - Adam Gusky has been named assistant women's tennis coach at Duke University announced on Wednesday by Blue Devil head coach Jamie Ashworth. Gusky, a 1997 Duke graduate, returns after training top regional and national players at the Universal Tennis Academy in Atlanta, Ga. the last five years.
"I am extremely excited to be back with the Duke tennis program," said Gusky. "I love Duke and Duke tennis. I am looking forward to taking the Blue Devils to where they have never gone before -- A National Championship."
A native of North Miami Beach, Fla., Gusky was an All-ACC selection as a freshman at Duke after registering a 25-8 singles and 19-4 doubles mark in his first year as a Blue Devil. Overall, he posted a four-year singles record of 82-37 and doubles record of 75-36. In ACC singles action, Gusky recorded a 24-2 record in his career.
"It is good to bring someone back who has been part of Duke before," said Ashworth. "Adam knows the daily grind which Duke students go through. He knows the kind of life-style our student-athletes live and that will help him get adjusted with our team."
Gusky attended North Miami Beach High School where he was a 1991 All-America selection and 1992 U.S. National Doubles Champion. He was ranked number one in the state of Florida, number six in the nation for 18-and-under and was ranked in the top 500 of the ATP Tour.
"Adam has worked with some of the top junior players in the country, which are the kind of players we have here and are trying to bring in," said Ashworth. "The team is excited about him joining the program and the possibility of him helping us to win the national championship."
Among training junior tennis players since graduating from Duke, Gusky had been a Highlight Supervisor/Video Editor/Production Assistant with CNN/Sports Illustrated from 1997-2000 and worked in Marketing and Business Development for o2wireless Solutions from 2000-02. He received a degree in History along with a Markets & Management Certificate at Duke.
Gusky replaces Jeremy Loomis, who took the head coaching position at Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pa. The Blue Devils return eight letterwinners off of last year's 25-5 squad, which advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16.
