PEACHTREE CITY, GA. - In her first collegiate action, Duke freshman Julia Smith won the Flight B singles title over the weekend at the Adidas Invitational in Peachtree City, Ga. Smith, a native of Windlesham, England, knocked off four players on her way to winning the title.
On the weekend, 99th-ranked Smith defeated Ashley Robards of Tennessee (6-3, 6-2), Sarah Jane Connelly of Notre Dame (7-5, 6-1), Crystal Cleveland of Tennessee (6-0, 6-0) and her own teammate, Prim Siripipat, of Duke (6-2, 6-1) to capture the title.
Other highlights over the weekend included, junior 16th-ranked Amanda Johnson (Bettendorf, Iowa) who advanced to the Flight A singles championship match before falling to top-ranked Vilmarie Castellvi of Tennessee (2-6, 0-6). Sophomore 47th-ranked Saras Arasu (Tampa, Fla.) knocked off 12th-ranked Lindsey Dawaf of Florida in the quarterfinal round, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. Arasu went on to lose in the semifinal round to her teammate, Johnson.
Senior Prim Siripipat (Missouri, Mo.) also advanced to the finals of the Flight B singles bracket before falling to Smith. Siripipat defeated Kathleen McGaffigan of Wisconsin (6-4, 6-0), Ruth Barnes of Northwestern (6-2, 6-2) and Duke's Hillary Adams (7-6, 6-2). In the Flight B bracket, Duke had three of the four competitors playing in the semifinal round..
In doubles action, Duke's 18th-ranked duo of Julie DeRoo/Johnson advanced to the finals of the Flight A bracket before falling to 15th-ranked Dawaf/Julie Rotondi (5-8). The Blue Devil tandem of Katie Granson/Smith advanced to the semifinals before falling to DeRoo/Johnson (7-9).
The Blue Devils will next play at the Gator Classic in Gainesville, Fla. from Oct. 4-6 and at the Riviera All-American in Pacific Palisades, Calif. from Oct. 5-13.
