DURHAM, N.C. - The fourth-ranked Duke women's tennis team downed 51st-ranked Pennsylvania, 6-1, on Friday evening at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham. The Blue Devils improve to 2-0 overall, while Pennsylvania falls to 0-1.
The Blue Devils got the match started by sweeping all three doubles matches to take an 1-0 advantage. Duke received an 8-3 victory by 11th-ranked Amanda Johnson/Julie DeRoo as they defeated 14th-ranked Alice Pirsu/Sheila Chao. Duke's 13th-ranked tandem of Kelly McCain/Hillary Adams knocked off Raluca Ciochina/Raluca Ciulei (8-1) and 49th-ranked duo of Katie Granson/Julia Smith also defeated Nicole Ptak and Caroline Stanislawski (8-5).
Duke then built a 3-0 lead as Granson downed Ciochina (7-5, 6-1) at the fourth slot and 36th-ranked DeRoo defeated Ptak (6-3, 6-0) at No. 2. Pennsylvania cut the Blue Devil lead to 3-1 as 14th-ranked Pirsu knocked off 15th-ranked Johnson, 6-4, 6-4, at the top position.
Senior Prim Siripipat, a native of Mexico, Mo., battled back from being down 4-1 in the first set to bounce Stanislawski, 7-5, 6-1, which clinched the victory for the Blue Devils. Adams also came back after losing the first set, 4-6, to knock off Chao 7-5, 6-0. Smith finished off Kunovac, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to finish off the match.
Duke will next host eighth-ranked Vanderbilt on Sunday at 12:00 PM in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. It will mark the homecoming of former Duke head coach Geoff MacDonald who coached the Blue Devils to a 64-12 record from 1992-94.
