DURHAM, N.C. - Seven different Duke women's tennis players will look to battle for a Grand Slam Singles title beginning on Saturday in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Riviera All-American, which will take place from Oct. 4-12.
The 64-player (32 doubles) prequalifying tournament is Oct. 4-5 at UCLA with four singles players and doubles teams advancing from there to the Oct. 7-8 64-player qualifying tournament at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Then, eight players and four doubles teams will advance to the main draw, which will be Oct. 9-12.
Three Duke singles players- Kristin Cargill, Tory Zawacki and Jennifer Zika- will each participate in the prequalifying stage, which begins on Saturday. Cargill, a freshman from Atlanta, Ga., will take on Kit Carson of SMU in the first round, while Zawacki, a freshman native of Union, N.J., will go up against Daniela Muscolino of Tulsa in round one. Zika, a freshman product of Wels, Austria, battles Judy DeVera of Southern California on Saturday. Zawacki is seeded eighth overall in prequalifying.
Sophomore Julia Smith and junior Saras Arasu will begin playing in the qualifying round on Oct. 7, while ninth-ranked Amanda Johnson received an invitation to play in the main draw, which begins on Oct. 9.
In doubles action, Duke teams of Cargill/Arasu, Johnson/Zawacki and Zika/Smith will each begin playing on Oct. 7 in the qualifying stage.
