DURHAM, N.C. - Duke freshman Parker Goyer and the doubles team of Saras Arasu and Kristin Cargill each advanced on Thursday at the 2003 Omni Hotel Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regionals in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Goyer won two matches on the day to advance to the main draw of the regionals. A Birmingham, Ala., product, Goyer defeated tanja Markovich of North Carolina (6-0, 5-7, 6-3) and then knocked off Jennifer Jassawalla of N.C. State (6-4, 6-2) to advance.
Cargill, Julia Smith, Jennifer Zika, Tory Zawacki and Arasu will all play on Friday in the main draw.
Cargill, a freshman from Atlanta, Ga., will open against 13th-seeded Jennifer Klaschka of Middle Tennessee State, while 11th-seeded and 45th-ranked Smith, will battle Jenna Long of North Carolina. A freshman from Wels, Austria, sixth-seeded Zika will go up against a qualifier, Zawacki will take on Rachel Magory from College of Charleston and 10th-seeded Arasu will face Karina Ledaja of Western Kentucky.
In doubles play, Duke's duos of Amanda Johnson/Zika and Smith/Zawacki are seeded fifth and sixth, respectively, and received a bye in the first round. The Blue Devil tandem of Arasu/Cargill won 8-2 over Laura Ganzer/Christyn Lucas of South Carolina on Thursday.
