WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Kristin Cargill, Jennifer Zika, Tory Zawacki and Saras Arasu each advanced in singles action on Friday for the Blue Devils at the 2003 Omni Hotel Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regionals in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Cargill, a freshman from Atlanta, Ga., defeated 13th-seeded Jennifer Klaschka of Middle Tennessee State (6-4, 7-5), while 11th-seeded and 45th-ranked Smith, fell to Jenna Long of North Carolina (6-4, 6-1). A freshman from Wels, Austria, sixth-seeded Zika downed Renata Caceres of Winthrop (6-4, 6-1), Zawacki knocked off Rachel Magory from College of Charleston (6-1, 6-1) and 10th-seeded Arasu defeated Karina Ledaja of Western Kentucky (6-4, 6-2). Freshman Parker Goyer also fell to fourth-seeded Ashley Robards of Tennessee (6-0, 7-6).
In doubles play, Duke's tandem of Zawacki and Julia Smith advanced to the elite eight with victories over Wake Forest and North Carolina. In the first match, the Duke duo won 8-0 over Blakely Offutt and Elizabeth Proctor of Wake Forest and then won 8-6 over Sara Anundsen and Caitlin Collins from North Carolina.
The Duke teams of Arasu/Cargill and Johnson/Zika each fell in the second round on Friday. The team of Arasu and Cargill lost 9-7 to seventh-seeded Sarah Fuster and Aibika Kalsarieva, while Johnson and Zika lost 8-4 to Richele Lesaldo and Karen Rombouts.
