WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Saturday was not a good day for the Duke women's tennis team as all four singles players and the lone doubles team left all fell at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Both 43rd-ranked Saras Arasu and freshman Tory Zawacki each won their second round matches, but fell in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Arasu knocked off Sandie Knight of Wake Forest (7-6, 6-3), but fell 6-0, 6-4 to 37th-ranked Manon Kruse in the next round. Zawacki, of Union, N.J., defeated Caitlin Collins of North Carolina (7-6, 7-6), but then came down with an injury and lost 6-0, 6-2 to 53rd-ranked Karin Koetzee (Wake Forest).
In other singles action, freshman Kristin Cargill lost 6-0, 6-2 to Aibika Kalsarieva of Kentucky and freshman Jennifer Zika lost 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 to Lee Bairos of North Carolina.
Duke's doubles duo of Julia Smith and Zawacki had to withdrawal from the final eight due to an injury to Zawacki.
The Blue Devils will next play in the ITA National Indoor Championships beginning Nov. 6 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
