LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - Duke University freshman Jennifer Zika collected two singles victories on Saturday to advance to the qualifying round of the 2003 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Riviera All-American.
Zika, a native of Wels, Austria, defeated Southern California's Judy DeVera, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 and then downed 99th-ranked Kendall Cline of North Carolina, 6-4, 6-4, to advance. If Zika wins her match on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. (EST) against Natalie Fraizer of Georgia, she will advance to the qualifying round on Tuesday.
Other freshmen- Tory Zawacki and Kristin Cargill- each fell in their first round match on Saturday. Zawacki won her first set over Daniela Muscolino of Tulsa, 6-4, but lost the next two sets 5-7, 3-6 to get the loss. Cargill lost 3-6, 6-4, 3-6 to Kim Carson of SMU. Both Zawacki and Cargill were seeded in the top-16 of the prequalifying singles bracket.
