PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. - Duke's doubles tandem of Amanda Johnson and Tory Zawacki won their first round match on Tuesday in the qualifying round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American and will next battle Oklahoma's 25th-ranked Heather Saluri and Anda Perianu on Wednesday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The Blue Devil duo of Johnson/Zawacki, who were preseason ranked 18th-nationally, knocked off 23rd-ranked Courtney Bergman and Susanna Lingman, 8-4, of Harvard on Tuesday. In other doubles action, the duo of Saras Arasu and Kristin Cargill fell to Helga Vieira and Jessica Roland (8-6) of Texas A&M in round one.
Arasu, a native of Tampa, Fla., also played in singles on Tuesday. The 43rd-ranked junior won her first round match over 75th-ranked Amy Walgenback of Purdue (6-4, 6-3) before falling in round two to Florida's 59th-ranked Jennifer Magley (6-2, 7-5).
Johnson is the only singles player left for the Blue Devils at the Riviera All-American and she will play on Thursday in the main draw.
